Papua New Guinea disaster officials say 13 people were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Tokia in the Southern Highlands province on Friday.

Martin Mose of the National Disaster and Emergency Service says the latest reports he has say around another six are receiving treatment for injuries.

There had been earlier reports of 25 injured.

Martin Mose says most of those who died were in a municipal market in Tokia.

"it also housed an entertainment centre...snooker games were played there too, so the people that went there would mostly be shoppers who went there for the shopping as well as those there to play snooker"

Martin Mose says a number of people managed to escape unscathed from the market building.
