Solomons power authority shuts down water pumping stations

4:18 pm on 6 May 2003

The Solomon Island Electricity Authority says all of Honiara's water pumping stations have now had their power cut off.

The Authority's General Manager, Mike Nation, says this is the next step after electricity supplies to all government departments were cut off yesterday after the government failed to pay its bills.

Mr Nation says the last payment was made in early April and despite many assurances no more money has been forthcoming.

"we're hoping that this might be the straw if you like, that finally gets their attention that electricity is a priority, a very high priority that is, no electricity, no water."

Mr Nation says the authority has been forced into this action because it didn't have enough money to pay for fuel.
