It has been revealed that the remains of a Kanak man, Jean Marie Goyeta, who was shot dead by a gunman last year in Noumea in New Caledonia, were disinterred for a post mortem last week.

Mr Goyeta was shot on January 8th last year, and died three days later.

The death happened during a series of confrontations between Kanaks and settlers from Wallis and Futuna in a Noumea suburb.

The Kanaks had demanded that the Wallisians leave the area.

Local media report that Mr Goyeta's family and friends are shocked at the disinterment, which was done to allow forensics teams to look for possible bullet fragments, and the calibre of the gun.

Results of the post mortem are not due for several weeks.

A Wallisian man, 27 year old Laurent Vili, is facing murder charges over the shooting.
