Call for quick introduction in Fiji of laws over political fundraising

Fiji's National Federation Party has called for the swift implementation of laws to make the fundraising activities of political parties transparent and accountable.

The NFP's call comes after revelations in parliament the the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, and four senior cabinet ministers have formed a company, Duavata Initiative Ltd, in which they are shareholders and directors.

The NFP leader, Prem Singh, says the company reeks of suspicion and is in breach of the ethic of political morality and transparency.

Mr Singh says there is no guarantee that large donors and political organisations will not seek favours from the government in return for their handouts to the company.

Mr Qarase has defended the company saying it is an initiative for fundraising for the ruling SDL party by providing it with ongoing income support and 10 per cent of the proceeds are said to go to charity.

But the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has also attacked the company saying its articles of association give it the potential to become a vehicle for corrupt deals, extortion and money laundering.
