Chimbu province in Papua New Guinea is in mourning over the death of its governor, Father Louis Ambane.

Reports say Father Ambane, who was in his 60s, died on Saturday from liver fibrosis.

Father Ambane was diagnosed with the disease six months ago and had recovered after receiving treatment in Australia.

But he suffered a relapse two weeks ago and was initially admitted to Kundiawa hospital.

Father Ambane died while he was being airlifted from Kundiawa to the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby.

He was serving his second term in office after being first elected in 1997.
