Another call in Fiji to deregulate communications industry

10:52 am on 14 May 2003

Fiji's former communications minister, Meli Bogileka, has called on the government to deregulate the communications industry.

Mr Bogileka says this should be done as soon as possible because the monopoly currently held by Telecom Fiji Limited has resulted in sky-high charges for telephone, fax and internet services.

Mr Bogileka has described these charges as "serial killers" in a developing country like Fiji.

He says investors normally fear high operating costs and in Fiji's case, "the political uncertainty, and high violent crimes on business operators are added curses".
