Doctors in Samoa are asking the government to consider a 15 to 20 percent increase in their salaries.
The new president of the Samoa Medical Association, Uifagasa Dr Aisolia Vaai, has confirmed the request.
Uifagasa says Samoa needed about another 30 to 40 qualified doctors to adequately serve the country.
He says doctors deserve more than the current starting salary of 7-thousand US dollars, considering the high educational qualifications required and the nature of their work.
Uifagasa also says that doctors currently work many hours overtime because there are not enough of their colleagues.
