New Caledonia's public sector unions have ended their protest action over the retirement fund provisions for workers.

The three-day strike, which began on Tuesday and subsequently crippled Noumea, came to an end after the local government received a union delegation and agreed to re-open negotiations.

Last year the Pension fund had a deficit of about 30 million US dollars.
