Fiji TV stopped from carrying treason trial

4:17 pm on 26 June 2003

The Suva High Court has refused an application by Fiji Television Limited to carry live coverage of the sentencing of treason convicts Josefa Nata and Timooci Silatolu tomorrow.

Radio Fiji says Justice Andrew Wilson has restricted TV coverage to only pictures of himself and the lawyers as they approach and enter the court.

He is quoted as saying sensationalising of the event should be minimised.

Defence lawyers had objected to Fiji TV's application while the state lawyer supported it.

Meanwhile, Josefa Nata, in his pre-sentencing mitigation, said he regretted taking part in events associated with the coup.

Nata said indigenous Fijians were used extensively to break the law to pursue the aspirations of those who planned and instigated the coup.
