EU threatens to withhold aid if Fiji government ignores Supreme Court judgment

The European Union has threatened to withhold 22 million US dollars in aid if the Fiji government does not implement the ruling of the Supreme Court on the multi-party cabinet case.

The Daily Post reports that the warning has been delivered by the acting head of the EU office in Suva, Maria Ralha, and comes as the country waits for the court ruling on the case heard last week.

Ms Ralha says the EU would closely follow the process of the restoration of constitutional government in Fiji.

She says the EU had suspended all aid to Fiji except for the Sugar Protocol after the 2000 coup but restored some following the general election in 2001.

Ms Ralha says the 22 million EU aid in jeopardy if Fiji does not implement the court ruling is meant to finance a major education project for rural dwellers and the underprivileged.

Other aid projects such as the construction of the 11 million US dollar Rewa Bridge would go ahead.
