Doctors' strike in French Polynesia partly over

6:19 am on 28 May 2003

A month-long doctors' strike in French Polynesia has in part ended, with private sector doctors reaching an agreement with the public health care insurance, the CPS, over proposed changes.

A spokesman for the doctors, Michel Galtier, says a convention has now been signed which has also been endorsed by the territorial government.

President Gaston Flosse says both sides have made concessions but he has warned that his administration cannot accept that health care costs rise faster than its incomes.

Meanwhile, talks are continuing between the health ministry and doctors in the public sector to settle their dispute.
