Fiji opposes regional air services agreement

12:21 pm on 23 May 2003

Fiji's cabinet has re-endorsed its position not to accept the regional Pacific Islands Air Services Agreement or PIASA.

Fiji's minister for civil aviation, Jose Vosanibola, says Fiji reserves the right to determine its own path and pace of change in the liberalisation of its air services.

Mr Vosanibola says the time is not right at this stage for a multi-lateral agreement for the exchange of air traffic rights.

He says the cabinet believes that Fiji should not rush into the PIASA given that there is very little air trafic between Forum Island countries.

Mr Vosanibola says Fiji is better off pursuing liberalisation at its own pace through more bilateral agreements.
