8:41 am on 24 May 2003

A woman claiming to have been raped by a priest in Fiji has filed a writ against him in the High Court.

It's believed to be the first such case in the country.

The Daily Post says the Marist priest alleged to have committed the offence, has fled the country.

The paper says the woman, whose identity has been withheld, has engaged Suva lawyer, Tevita Fa, to fight her case.

Mr Fa says he's filed a writ seeking damages from the priest and the Oceania Marist Province for the woman's ordeal.

Father Mick O'Connor of the Marist Province has confirmed receiving the writ and expressed concern for those involved.
