Fiji minister threatens to deregister unions amid illgal strikes

6:19 am on 23 May 2003

Fiji's labour minister, Kenneth Zinck, has threatened to de-register trade unions which promote illegal strikes.

The Daily Post reports that Mr Zinck made the threat after more than 200 workers of Nestle Fiji's Ba factory walked off their jobs in protest at the abusive bahaviour of a supervisor.

Mr Zinck says he is fed up with illegal strikes and disruptions, and losses to the economy.

He says the best option now is to start de-registering trade unions which become party to illegal activity at the work place.

The minister says walkouts and illegal strikes are not the way to do things.

The general secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Felix Anthony, says the minister is welcome to de-register any union he wishes, but he should remember that many Zincks have come and gone but trade unions still exist.
