6:57 am on 7 July 2003

Kiribati has a new president after Anote Tong beat his older brother for the post.

Nearly a thousand votes separated the two main contenders.

Anote Tong had opposition backing, while his brother Dr Harry Tong, had been put forward by the ruling Maurin Maneaba Party.

The presence of a Chinese satellite spy base on the capital atoll of Tarawa has been a major issue throughout the elections.

Anote Tong pledged before the elections to review the Chinese lease and "to take the appropriate actions at the right time".
