Three Papuans face treason charge over flag incident

10:27 am on 6 June 2003

Reports from Indonesia say three men in Papua province have been charged with treason linked to possessing an outlawed separatist flag.

If found guilty, Herman Wanggai, Edison Waromi and Yordan Ik could face the death penalty.

The defence says freedom of expression is part of democracy and carrying the Morning Star separatist flag cannot be considered as treason.

The Jakarta Post says the three were arrested at the state-run Cendrawasih University in the provincial capital Jayapura while carrying the flag.
