Australia and NZ release more aid for education

3:21 pm on 4 July 2003

Australia and New Zealand have announced more funding for education for the Pacific.

Australia's parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister, Chris Gallus, says 13 million US dollars will be made available in Fiji.

She says funding will be used to upgrade assessment and examination procedures, provide technical and vocational support and a more practical curriculum.

New Zealand is to give another three million dollars over three years.

The trade negotiations minister, Jim Sutton, says getting every child in the Pacific in front of a qualified primary school teacher would give the region a chance of developing its potential.

Mr Sutton says education is the key to the Pacific's future success.
