Samoa's oldest ever member of parliament, Taatiti Alofa, has died at the age of 90, seven months after being elected.

It is being reported today that Taatiti, who was the country's oldest politician to become an MP, died after a severe stroke at the weekend.

He won the Alataua West seat for the opposition Samoa National Development Party last year in a by-election prompted by the death of the previous MP, Nonumalo Faiga.

The opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, told the Samoa Observer newspaper that in the short time they had together he had a great influence on caucus.
