New Caledonian unions resume industrial action against cuts in pension fund

4:38 am on 12 June 2003

Four New Caledonian unions have staged a protest and launched a new strike in Noumea over government plans to reduce losses being incurred by the public sector pension fund.

Hundreds of union members gathered outside the Congress building to denounce the proposals approved by the assembly.

They say they are against the cuts and demanded more people be covered by the fund.

The fund has been running at a loss which now amounts to nearly 100 thousand US dollars a day.

There is broad support for the reform in Congress, but in a vote it was opposed by the right-wing National Front and the pro-independece Caledonian Union.
