Solomons police avoid confronting Keke after latest killings

4:45 pm on 28 May 2003

Solomon Islands police say that a group headed by Guadalcanal Weather Coast rebel leader Harold Keke has built up at Oqio village where four people were killed yesterday.

The police spokesman Charles Lemoa says that the villagers died when Keke's supporters burnt down houses in Oqio.

Mr Lemoa says police cannot yet say why the attack happened because they are unable to get into the village.

"the problem was that the group was building up and they didn't want to make contact with them."

Charles Lemoa.

He says police have not yet decided how to respond to the latest killings attributed to Keke, who is blamed for several dozen deaths in the past year.
