Solomons may have another weapons amnesty

11:43 am on 24 June 2003

The Solomon Islands police commissioner, William Morrell, has not ruled out an amnesty for former militants to return weapons under an Australian plan to bring in a foreign force to restore law and order.

The signatories of the 2000 Townsville Peace Agreement did not honour their commitments to return stolen or illegally held weapons.

Commissioner Morrell is now considering another amnesty.

Dorothy Wickham reports.

"Speaking in a press conference yesterday in Honiara Morrell however said discussions on the finer details are still ongoing. He said he was not giving any detailed assurances yet. Commissioner Morrell leaves Honiara today for Australia and has revealed he will be holding discussions with his Australian and New Zealand counterparts concerning the proposed intervention."
