Petition opposing airport name change exceeds six thousand

3:28 pm on 16 June 2003

More than six and a half thousand people have now signed an online petition calling on the Solomon Islands Government not to change the name of Henderson Field.

The country's only international airport in Honiara is named after an American World War Two fighter pilot who died during the Battle of Midway.

The organisers of the petition hope to present it to the Prime Minister Sir Allen Kemakeza this week.

Many of those who have signed are veterans of the Battle of Guadalcanal or members of their families.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Development is pushing the proposed name change with Honiara International Airport the favoured alternative.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister says they have more important issues to worry about than changing the name of Henderson Field.
