The Vanuatu Meteorological Service says tropical cyclone Gina continues to batter northern islands with gale force winds.

The cyclone has moved in a southwesterly direction and early on Saturday was about 200 kilometres west of the island of Espiritu Santo.

Forecasters say winds close to the storms centre are expected to increase to 60 knots.

They seas will remain rough and coastal flooding can be expected, combined with heavy rain.

They also warn of possible landslides.

People are advised to remain in safe shelters.

On its current path the cyclone is likely to move to waters north of New Caledonia's main island.
