Solomon's province of Choiseul bans log exports until national government pays its grant

2:33 pm on 2 June 2003

The government in the Solomons Islands province of Choiseul has banned all log exports until the national government pays its provincial grant.

The Province's Finance and Investment Minister, Wilson Pita, says the national government was warned of the action at the end of April, but nothing has been done.

Mr Pita says Choiseul's government cannot provide services to its people because it doesn't have the money.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation says Western Province has taken similar action for the same reason.
