Reports from Kiribati claim that five members of the ruling Maurin Maneaba Party are considering joining the opposition ranks.

A reporter from Radio Kiribati says the opposition is moving quickly to narrow the ruling party's majority in parliament.

Anote Tong, who was backed by the opposition, was elected as Kiribati's President after beating his brother Harry Tong by nearly 1-thousand votes.

Harry Tong, who himself was a former opposition MP, was put forward by the ruling Maurin Maneaba Party.

Currently the opposition has 16 seats in parliament and the MMP 24.
