3:44 pm on 6 June 2003

The Vanuatu Metereological Service says tropical cyclone Gina has hit the northern islands of the country and should hit the largest island of Santo tomorrow morning.

Senior Meteorologist Williams Worwor says weather conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate.

He says the cyclone is just off Torres Island and is causing winds gusting up to 60 knots.

"That should be enough to demolish the weak structures, but the permanent structures that should not be any big problem, but now the cyclone is affecting the northern islands which is rural and most of the structures there are locally built houses"

Mr Worwor says people living in low-lying areas are being warned to take precautions because of the threat of landslides and flooding.
