American Samoa appeals to U.S. for assistance following flooding

The governor of American Samoa has asked President Bush, to declare the territory a major disaster area, following the flash floods which killed four people.

Togiola Tulafono says the hospital, homes, businesses, roads and farmlands have been extensively damaged by flooding and landslides.

He is asking the president to approve disaster housing, individual and family grants, disaster unemployment beneifts, crisis counselling and special loans for small businesses.

The governor is also asking for federal help in the clean up work.
