Papua New Guinea police have formally charged the former chariman of the National Provident Fund, Jimmy Maladina, with extortion, conspiracy and misappropriation of funds.
Maladina returned voluntarily from Brisbane last week after a prolonged battle to extradite him to face charges.
The charges relate to Maladina's alleged use of more than three quarters of a million US dollars from the Fund between december 1998 and February 1999.
He has been remanded on bail of around three thousand US dollars.
Maladina says he returned to Port Moresby to clear his good name.
