Fiji police launch major crackdown on illegal drugs

10:19 am on 8 July 2003

Fiji police have seized a quarter of a million US dollars worth of illegal drugs as part of efforts to crack down on a problem that is spiralling out of control.

Police say more than 30 kilograms of drugs were seized at the weekend and 35 people arrested and charged with being in possession of dangerous drugs

Police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, says 60 anti-drug raids in Suva and Sigatoka saw about 5 hundred marijuana plants uprooted.

He says the drugs were destined for Suva where thousands of regional athletes and visitors are present for the South Pacific Games which are now underway.

Police have set up checkpoints at strategic locations to halt the supply of drugs to the Games Village and venues, and other urban centres.

Police operations in Fiji's western and northern divisions in the last two weeks have also seen large quantities of ready-to-market drugs seized and plants uprooted from the ground.
