Solomons MPs to debate intervention plan today

10:12 am on 8 July 2003

The Solomon Islands Parliament meets today to endorse an Australian plan to send an armed force to restore law and order.

If approved, Australia has said the force could be in the country before the end of the month.

The Prime Minister Sir Allen Kemakeza says Cabinet agreed to the plan last week and that other MPs would have the weekend to study it prior to the Parliamentary session.

He says there will be a call for an amnesty period for ex-militants and that the force will not look into historic crimes.

The expected decision to temporarily cede some powers to an international force comes a day after the Solomons celebrated the 25th anniversary of its independence.
