Solomons NGOs want more consultation with intervention force

10:48 am on 25 July 2003

Solomon Islands NGOs want a say in how the intervention force goes about its work of restoring law and order.

Edgar Pakoa of the Development Services Exchange, which represents NGOs in the Solomons, says they welcome the force but have some misgivings about it.

He says it must uphold human rights and not reduce Solomon Islanders to a spectator role.

Mr Pakoa says before the force begins its work, it should consult widely with Solomons society.

"T he intervention programme should come in and look at the situation, have some discussion with Civil Society, with our local policeand traditional leaders to find out the best way to go about it."
