NZ Solomon troops say everything is on schedule

9:10 am on 28 July 2003

The senior national officer for New Zealand troops in Solomon Islands says everything is going to plan in the programme to bring security there.

The police, who head the regional assistance mission, say they hope to extend their patrol outside the capital, Honiara, in coming days.

There have been suggestions that armed forces are not yet prepared to provide emergency backup if a police patrol encounters hostilities.

However wing commander Shaun Clark says a couple of days' buildup and preparation was anticipated.

He says infantry have to set up supply systems and maintenance workshops as well as acclimatise to the conditions.
