Kanak leader rejects France's new Pacific policy

4:10 pm on 31 July 2003

A senior Kanak leader, Roch Wamytan, says he's opposed to France using New Caledonia to advance its Pacific policy because it violates the Noumea Accord.

The French president, Jacques Chirac wants to integrate the French territories in the Pacific and administer some aid through them.

But Mr Wamytan says the separatist FLNKS movement has a Pacific policy of its own that differs from that of Paris.

"This approach is in contradiction with the Noumea Accord, and with the right of the people, the human right of the colonised people in the Noumea Accord,......we FLNKS signed for a process of emancipation."
