Australia puts more money into Solomon Islands NPC

4:49 pm on 1 August 2003

Australia has committed around 600 hundred thousand US dollars to keep the Solomon Islands National Peace Council running.

The Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says aid from Australian and other donor nations will enable the NPC to continue its work in peace and nation-building.

The NPC, which replaced the Peace Monitoring Council a year, works with communities to encourage the surrender of weapons and help initiate reconciliation.

One of its higher profile programmes is the Weapons Free Villages campaign under which communities commit to be free of guns in exchange for assistance for social and sports groups.
