Australia's Foreign Minister, lexander Downer, says peacekeepers in Solomon Islands will face a more dangerous and difficult task when a gun amnesty expires on August 21st.

Mr Downer said the intervention mission had got off to a better start than anyone could have imagined, but that darker days were ahead.

In an interview on Australia's Channel Ten, reported by the Associated Press, he said it was hard to believe that all the guns would be handed by the end of the amnesty.

Mr Downer said the difficult part of the operation would be when the intervention force had to go after the weapons which were still out in the community.
