Call in Vanuatu for more transparency in NGO aid spending

4:20 am on 5 August 2003

There are moves in Vanuatu to have NGOs publicly reveal how they have spent aid money.

The scheme is being developed by Transparency International's Julie Hawkes who says there is a need for NGOs to become more accountable as more aid goes to them rather than governments.

Ms Hawkes says in the work she does with NGOs she often finds services are duplicated.

"If everything was out in the public area and everybody could have a look to see what other NGOs are doing and what aid is coming into NGOs then people would be more accountable, I think, for the money they are getting hold of.....everything would be very transparent"
