The president of Palau says he welcomes the European Union's support for the Kyoto Protocol to fight climate change.

Tommy Remengesau says this puts his country at odds with the position of its former colonial ruler, the US.

"As much as our friendship is very close with the United States and I think they know very well where Palau stands on this and we have made our position not only known in the Forum but in the international community at every opportunity. Palau has come out very strongly and very clearly that we are on the forefront of being directly affected by global warming and climate change and therefore we ask the developed nations of the earth to do something about it."
