The leader of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, Australian diplomat Nick Warner, says the gun amnesty which ended last night at midnight has yielded a very good result.

He says nearly three thousand guns have been surrendered or are in RAMSI's possession, along with around three hundred thousand rounds of ammunition.

"We wont have the final figures for a few days yet as weapons are still on small boats making their way from some of the outer provinces to Honiara. It will be round about three thousand and of those, about five hundred and fifty are military-style weapons. So it's a very good result."
