Solomons PM says rift in governing coalition has been healed

10:15 am on 22 August 2003

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, says differences between his party and its coalition partner have been resolved and no challenge to his position will be mounted by the foreign minister, Laurie Chan.

Sir Allan says the two sides have again re-committed themselves to serving out their full term.

He made the comment after a backbencher resigned from their ranks amid claims of a failed bid to bribe three ministers for them to switch allegiance within the coalition.

The opposition has said the instability was linked to a drive to install Mr Chan as the prime minister.

But Sir Allan says Mr Chan has assured him of his loyalty.
