7:50 am on 23 August 2003

Fiji's opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, has offered to mediate between the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and the Labour party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, on the multi-party cabinet impasse.

Radio fiji quotes Mr Beddoes as saying both leaders should stop the political posturing and reach a realistic solution to the political stalemate for the sake of the people.

He says a time will come when they will have to agree a compromise.

Mr Beddoes says if the two leaders continue on their present path it will cost the people of Fiji dearly.

Mr Beddoes says he is willing to step down from his position if Mr Chaudhry decides to remain in opposition.
