American Samoa governor says no need to reconfirm cabinet membership

8:12 am on 23 August 2003

The Governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, says his administration is a continuation of the late governor Tauese Sunia's administration so current cabinet members don't require resubmissions for Fono reconfirmation.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives passed separate resolutions requesting attorney general Fiti Sunia to render a written opinion, on whether Togiola should resubmit cabinet names for Legislative reconfirmation before the Fono reviews the 2004 fiscal year budget.

Togiola says the law is clear and he does not understand the reasons behind the resolutions.

He says he believes that some lawmakers want the opportunity to get back at some cabinet members who they do not like.

Togiola says local laws do not require him to terminate all directors and hire them back because they were hired for the duration of the administration's term which expires in January 2005.
