NZ Foreign minister welcomes UN endorsement of Solomons intervention

The New Zealand foreign minister, Phil Goff, says he hopes the United Nations will play a role in the rebuilding process in Solomon Islands after what he calls a strong endorsement of the Pacific nations intervention.

The Security Council said it welcomed the leadership shown by Australia and New Zealand, in close partnership with its neighbours, and hoped the mission would lead to the quick restoration of normalcy and harmony.

It asked all parties to co-operate in that rebuilding process by renouncing the use of armed violence to settle differences.

Mr Goff says he warmly welcomes the Security Council's declaration and he hopes the UN will consider increasing its involvement in the reconstruction.
