Australian led intervention force plan to set up 18 extra police posts in Solomons

3:40 pm on 1 September 2003

The Australian-led intervention force in Solomon islands has identified 18 locations where police posts could be established outside Honiara.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports the acting police commissioner, Ben McDevitt, says they've gone to each province and spoken with the executive of the Royal Solomon Islands police to make sure they agree where the ideal locations would be.

Mr McDevitt says while every village wants a police station, the important thing is to ensure that villagers can access police services.

The 18 posts will need good working accommodation for officers, access to motor vehicles, boats, fuel and stationery so that police can get on with their jobs.
