Samoa PM calls for media ethics code

9:29 am on 3 September 2003

Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, has said Samoa's media should set down a code of ethics and establish a committee to oversee compliance.

He used his keynote address at celebrations to mark the 25 year anniversary of the Samoa Observer to deliver his message.

The secretary of the Journalists Association of Western Samoa, Afamasaga Tovaega, said that although the organisation does not have a council to monitor media ethics ..local journalists were being sent overseas for awareness training.

He said the association was also looking at running local awareness programmes.

Tuilaepa said the government accepts and appreciates the role the media plays in moving the country forward.

He urged news organisations to tell stories truthfully, sensitively and practice good journalism.
