Fiji govt commissions new security review

9:46 am on 5 September 2003

The Fiji government has commissioned a defence and security review just six years after the last one.

The minister for home affairs, Joketani Cokanasiga, says since the last review there has been the overthrow of an elected government and a bloody army mutiny.

Regionally, he says, Fiji troops have been deployed closer to home in Bougainville and now Solomon Islands.

As well, international terrorism has become a scourge and reached this part of the world.

Mr Cokanasiga says all this indicates that Fiji's strategic environment is changing and becoming more uncertain.

He says the review will form the government's national security strategy and enable Fiji to be better prepared to face future challenges.
