First funeral of French Polynesia shipping accident victims

3:26 pm on 5 September 2003

The funeral has been held in French Polynesia for one of the men who died in this week's shipping accident off Rimatara island.

Karl Tauru was buried in Faa'a on Tahiti this morning as the search continues for bodies of those who perished when the Tahiti Nui IV sank in rough seas nearly three days ago.

The vessel had 21 people onboard of whom 14 were rescued.

Three people died and four are still missing.

The ship was carrying heavy construction material bound for Rimatara, when it encountered heavy seas.

No cause for the accident has been established but it is believed the cargo may have shifted causing the ship to capsize.
