Smuggling racket involving flight attendants uncovered in Solomon Islands

4:15 pm on 8 September 2003

Intervention force officers working with the Solomon Islands Custom Department have uncovered a smuggling operation run by flight attendants.

The attendants, who work for the state owned airline, are thought to have been illegally importing cigarettes and spirits from Australia and Vanuatu for a number of years.

Four people were detained at Henderson Airport after they were found to be carry undeclared alcohol and cigarettes following a tip off from the Vanuatu authorities.

More attendants are likely to be questioned this week

The racket has prevented the Solomon Islands government receiving thousands of dollars worth of import duties
