New Fiji waste recycling plant planned

One of Fiji's leading businessman, Hari Punja, is investing 15-million US dollars in a waste recycling plant to generate electricity.

The concept envisages using 250-tonnes of municipal waste from Suva daily to provide 4.6 megawatts of electricity which will be sold to the Fiji Electricity Authority.

Part of the project income will be from carbon credits, making Fiji the first country in the region to participate in carbon credits trading made possible by the Kyoto Protocol.

Mr Punja says the plant will not use incineration in its operation which will be located about 15 kilometres west of Suva at the new European Union-funded landfill.
