4:34 am on 11 September 2003

The first police officers from the Cook Islands and Fiji have arrived in Solomon Islands to supplement the existing police contingent of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

The Fiji and Cook Islands personnel join colleagues from Australia, Kiribati, New Zealand and Tonga serving alongside officers of the Solomon Islands Police.

Last week, the Acting Police Commissioner and head of the regional police contingent, Ben McDevitt, said he expected police officers from Vanuatu, Samoa and Tuvalu to also arrive soon.

All police officers participating in the regional force undertake training in Queensland before being deployed to Solomon Islands.
