Solomons prison rebuilt

11:17 am on 13 September 2003

The first stage of new building development at the Rove Central Prison in Honiara was opened on Friday afternoon.

The high security unit is just one wing of the new prison that is being constructed as part of the development assistance provided by the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands or RAMSI.

The prison will be able to house 300 inmates in international standard conditions when it's completed.

RAMSI head Nick Warner handed over the keys to the new wing facility to the controller of prisons before conducting a short tour of the new high security wing.
